Biography

Frank Alan Burtner, Jr. was born in Wharton, Texas on July 3, 1914, the only child of Frank Alan Burtner, Sr. and Adda Lee Martin Burtner. Frank Alan Burtner, Jr. received his Bachelor's and Masters degree from the University of Texas in 1939. He began his career as an Instructor in Sociology and Economics at Clemson College on September 1, 1939. In 1945, he became Assistant Professor; in 1948 Associate Professor; and in 1958 Professor; and also granted tenure. He also received his PhD. from University of North Carolina in 1958. In 1962, he received a fellowship to teach in Europe under a government program administered by the University of Maryland. He also taught Pre-med for 30 years at Clemson.

Frank Alan Burtner, Jr. served as advisor to many Clemson Student organizations and was active in several professional organizations. He was advisor for the Blue Key Honor Fraternity for 33 years. He was advisor to Inter-Fraternity Council and Fraternity Affairs. He was also director of the Pre-professional Health Program for 30 years. He was a member of numerous professional organizations, such as the American Sociological Association and the Southern Sociological Association. He was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Frank Alan Burtner, Jr. was given a Service Award by Governor Dick Riley in 1981 for his 40 years of State Service. He retired on June 30, 1984 from Clemson University after 45 years of service. On October, 1986, the President's Office of Clemson University announced the establishrnnet of the Burtner Endownment, which provided $2,000 scholarships for upperclassman.

Frank Alan Burtner, Jr. died, January 31, 1990.

Scope and Contents

The Fraternities series includes information about seventeen different fraternities. There are nine national fraternities which Burtner helped establish at Clemson. The other eight fraternities are social chapters. The nine national fraternities are Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Theta Chi.

The Fraternity Information series includes correspondence, booklets and newspapers about housing; correspondence about the installation of South Carolina Gamma Alpha Epsilon and correspondence and questionnaires concerning the establishment of national fraternities.

The Sociology Department series contains self-study reports, correspondence, forms and student publications. It also includes a limited biographical file on Burtner and his personnel file. The personnel file is restricted.

The papers are arranged in three series: Fraternities, Fraternity Information and Sociology Department. The Fraternity files are arranged alphabetically by fraternity name. The Fraternity Information files and the Sociology Department files are arranged alphabetically by topic.
