Biographical Note

Harry Shuler Dent was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina on February 21, 1930, the son of Hampton Nathaniel Dent, Sr. and Sally Prickett. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 1951, attended the University of South Carolina Law School, and received his LLB from George Washington University in 1957 and his LLM from Georgetown University in 1959. Dent attended Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) 1981-1982 and earned a Certificate in Bible Studies. He married Elizabeth Inez Francis in 1951 and they had four children: Harry Dent Jr., Dolly, Ginny, and Jack.

Dent entered the Army in 1951 as a second lieutenant and was released as a first lieutenant after serving in the 24th Infantry Division, Far East Command, from 1952-1953. He became administrative assistant to Strom Thurmond in 1955 and held this position until 1965, when he became chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party. In 1968 Dent became Deputy Counsel to President Nixon and in 1969 Special Counsel, and served in this position until he resigned in December 1972. He served as general counsel to the Republican National Committee from 1973-1974. In 1974 he plead guilty to a misdemeanor for his part in the 1970 “townhouse operation” that raised funds for the Nixon administration and was given one month of unsupervised probation.

Dent worked for the presidential campaigns of Gerald R. Ford (1976) and George H. W. Bush (1980) and served as the President's representative to the Sabine River Compact Administration 1977-1978 and as a member of the advisory committee to the Campaign Advising Service of the Republican National Committee in 1977.

He became a partner in the law firm Dent and Kennedy in 1965 and continued with that firm until 1968. He later became a partner in the firm of Whaley, McCutchen, Blanton and Dent (1973-1974) and was a senior partner of the firm Dent, Kirkland, Taylor and Wilson until 1981. After earning his certificate from Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) in Columbia, SC he was the first director of the Billy Graham Lay Center in Asheville, NC from 1982-1985. Dent and his wife started their lay ministry, Laity Alive and Serving, Inc. in 1985; the ministry was continued after his death by his daughter Ginny and her husband Alton Brant. Harry and Betty Dent made numerous trips abroad as part of their ministry and were involved in setting up eighteen missions in Romania after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989. Dent was also very involved in the evangelical activities of the Southern Baptists. He was vice chairman of the Carolinas Billy Graham Crusade in Charlotte, NC (1985-1986) and chairman of the South Carolina Billy Graham Crusade in Columbia (1986-1987). Dent served as a trustee of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY from 1986-1996 and of the Baptist College of Charleston in South Carolina (from 1990 known as Charleston Southern University) from 1988-1992, as well as serving as a member of the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee from 1996-2001. In 1995 South Carolina Superintendent of Education Barbara Nielsen appointed Dent to establish character education as part of the school curriculum. He also acted as a correspondent for several South Carolina newspapers and radio stations. He was the author of five books: Prodigal south returns to power (1978),  Layman looks through the Bible for God's will (1983),  Cover up: the Watergate in all of us (1986),  Right vs. wrong: solutions to the American nightmare (with his wife Betty, 1992) and  Teaching Jack and Jill right vs. wrong in the homes and schools: a primer on character education (1996). He died on September 28, 2007 in Columbia, SC from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Scope and Content Note

The Harry S. Dent Papers contain affidavits, articles, artifacts, audio cassettes, book drafts (first drafts and later), clippings, correspondence, a DVD, financial documents, fliers, legal documents, maps, minutes, newsletters, newspapers, page proofs, photographs, scrapbooks, sermons, speeches, transcripts, videocassettes, and other items spanning the period from 1913-2007 with the bulk of the material dating from 1966 to 1995. The collection documents his role as Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party; his work for President Richard M. Nixon’s administration as Deputy/Special Counsel; his legal career after his departure from the White House staff; his tenure as Director of the Billy Graham Lay Center from 1982-1985; and his Baptist evangelical work with his wife Betty through their lay ministry Laity Alive and Serving, including missions to the Cluj-Napoca region of Romania and Dent’s chairmanship of the Billy Graham Crusade held in Columbia, South Carolina in 1987. There is also material on the Watergate scandal and his peripheral involvement in it; his service as a trustee to the Baptist College at Charleston (SC; later Charleston Southern University) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY); his involvement in the Health Investment Group, Inc.; and the writing of his books Prodigal south returns to power,  Layman looks through the Bible for God's will,  Cover up: the Watergate in all of us, and  Right vs. wrong: solutions to the American nightmare. Aside from the scrapbooks, there is very little in the papers concerning Dent’s personal life and career prior to becoming South Carolina Republican Party chairman in 1965. Among the items of interest in the collection are the White House files relating to the run-up to the 1972 Presidential election, including information about the other two candidates, George McGovern and George Wallace. The Personal series has material relating to the 1976 and 1980 presidential elections; the latter includes both George Bush’s primary campaign and Ronald Reagan’s general election campaign. The Legal series documents his work with the South Carolina Association for the Deaf (particularly  Barnes v. Converse College) and the South Carolina Healthcare Association (mainly legal work for nursing homes), as well as the Wagdy Demian case which highlights the internal working of the South Carolina Department of Social Services. In the Laity: Alive and Serving series one can not only find an oral history on the Graham Crusade conducted by the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, Illinois (the Crusade material in this series supplements that held by Center) but Dent’s research on the role of the laity in the church; his development of materials to teach about God and the Bible and his extensive teaching schedule; his role in creating a “sister city” relationship between Columbia and Cluj-Napoca, including working with Columbia’s mayor, Bob Coble; and his promotion of character education in secondary school. This series also documents the often contentious transition from a moderate to a conservative administration and Board of Trustees for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, including controversies over the theological stances of President Roy Lee Honeycutt and faculty members E. Glenn Hinson, Molly Marshall-Green, and Paul Simmons.

Other topics covered in the Dent Papers include U.S. and Southern politics; the Nixon administration; the history of the national and South Carolina Republican Parties; the 1970 and 1972 political campaigns for the U.S. House; the textile industry in South Carolina and the United States; state and federal laws concerning the deaf, especially regarding accessibility in higher education; and state and federal laws regarding nursing homes. There is also some material relating to state legislator Sol Blatt, his political colleagues Lee Atwater and J. Fred Buzhardt, Jr. as well as former employers U.S. President Richard M. Nixon and U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.

Correspondents include U.S. Vice President Spiro Agnew; evangelists Bill Barton, Leighton Ford, Billy Graham, John Guest, and Josef Tson; White House staff members Ken Belieu, Gordon Brownell, Alexander Butterfield, Dwight Chapin, Charles Colson, John Ehrlichman, Peter Flanigan, Jack Gleason, H. R. Haldeman, Bryce Harlow, Jeb Stuart Magruder, and Peter Millspaugh; U.S. Presidents George Bush, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan; South Carolina governors Carroll Campbell and James B. Edwards; Dent’s wife Betty; Republican Party operative James Duffy; business leaders Jack Eckerd (founder of Eckerd Drugs), Roger Milliken, and Darla Moore; U.S. Senators Barry Goldwater and Strom Thurmond; the Health Investment Group, Inc.; religious scholar E. Glenn Hinson; Roy Lee Honeycutt and R. Albert Mohler, presidents of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY; Greg Horton, 1991 President of the South Carolina Baptist Convention; J. Robertson McQuilkin, president of Columbia Bible college (now Columbia International University) in Columbia, SC; the National Center for Law and the Deaf, Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C.; the South Carolina Association of the Deaf; the South Carolina Healthcare Association; Alastair Walker, formerly pastor of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC; General William Westmoreland; Congressman Ed Young; and Dr. Gregore Zanc, professor of philosophy and Prefect of Cluj-Napoca.

White House Files Series 1968-1973  (Bulk, 1969-1972)   11.0 cubic feet  (consisting of 547 folders and 2 photographs).

Scope and Contents note

The White House files contain agendas, articles, brochures, clippings, copies of correspondence, invitations, lists, maps, copies of memoranda, minutes, newsletters, polls, postcards, reports, schedules, statements and telegrams.

The material in this series dates from 1968 to 1973 with the bulk of the material dating from 1969-1972 when Dent was Deputy/Special Counsel to U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. It is divided into two chronological subseries: the Subject File, arranged alphabetically by subject within each year and the Alphabetical File, arranged by name within each year. Originally, these two subseries were meant as parallel files that would provide name and subject cross-referencing. However, the overlap between the two subseries is not complete — material exists in one that is not in the other, although there was an attempt to complete the Nixon material in the alphabetical file by photocopying. Photographs have been removed to photograph storage. See the Photographs Series for photographs removed from this series.

Most of the material in this series consists of copies of memos and correspondence to and from Dent, much of it to and from members of the White House staff. There is some original incoming and outgoing correspondence in the Subject File, however. The contents of the series document Dent’s role in political coordination, strategy (especially in the South) and patronage. For example, there are files relating to politics for various states which contain analysis of state races (gubernatorial, Senate, House and occasionally mayoral and state legislative races), support for Nixon and results of the 1968 presidential campaign; possible strategies and actions to gain the support “Middle America,” nationalities/ethnic groups, women, African Americans and other potential groups of supporters; the arrangement of meetings of appearances of the President, his family, and other government officials and occasionally reports of the results of those meetings or appearances; and requests for help concerning government grants, decisions, etc. Patronage matters include judicial appointments, increasing Republican appointees in the government and complaints about Democratic holdovers, especially in the Office of Economic Opportunity.

While there is information on the 1970 and 1971 elections in the series, many of the files relate to preparations for the 1972 election. Material includes an analysis of Nixon’s strengths and weaknesses in regards to the campaign; a 1970 review (updated 1971) by Thomas Cole of Nixon‘s 1968 campaign speeches on domestic policy, a summary of administration actions or postures in each area mentioned, and recommendations concerning areas that still needed attention; information on potential and actual challengers, especially George Wallace and George McGovern; memos relating to a Census Department computer mapping project to provide demographic information useful to the campaign; “competitive analysis reports” done during the 1972 primary season that included a summary of events since the last report, news items of interest, poll results, and other candidates campaigns (issues, media, strategy, trends, etc.); and campaign manuals. There is also material relating to fund-raising, campaign strategy, voter registration, and the Republican Party in the South.

Additional subjects of interest include the Republican Party; the South Carolina Republican Party with material concerning U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, U.S. congressman Ed Young, and the appointment of Democrat Solomon Blatt, Jr. to a district judgeship; textile trade and the textile industry; public relations; and school desegregation. Biographical clippings files for Nixon and his wife Pat are part of this series. There are also some personal files in this series. Among the White House staff members sending correspondence or memos to Dent or receiving it from him are Ken Belieu, Gordon Brownell (Dent’s assistant), Alexander Butterfield, Dwight Chapin, Charles W. Colson, John Ehrlichman, Peter Flanigan, Jack A. Gleason, H. R. Haldeman, Bryce Harlow and Peter Millspaugh. Other individuals with material to and/or from them are U.S. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, Republican operative James E. Duffy, businessman Roger Milliken, Richard M. Nixon and Strom Thurmond.

Campbell, Carroll A. Dent, Harry S. , 1930-2007 Health Investment Group, Inc.. Magruder, Jeb Stuart, 1934- Moore, Darla, 1954- National Center for Law and the Deaf (U.S.). South Carolina Association for the Deaf. South Carolina Healthcare Association. Thurmond, Strom, 1902-2003 Legal Series 1913-1986  (Bulk, 1974-1981)   37.0 cubic feet  (consisting of 909 folders, 1 oversize item and 19 photographs).

Scope and Contents note

The Legal series includes affidavits, appeals, articles, briefs, clippings, contracts, correspondence, deeds, depositions, handbooks, laws, leases, legislative bills, lists, office manuals, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, reports, telegrams, timesheets, titles, transcripts, wills, and other financial and legal documents. The items in this series date from 1913-1986 with most of them created during Dent’s post-White House legal career from 1974-1981.

Material in this series is arranged alphabetically by folder title. Photographs and oversize items have been removed to photograph and oversize storage. See the Photographs Series for photographs removed from this series.

Almost all of the material in this series is from Dent’s tenure at Dent, Kirkland, Taylor and Wilson and reflects his work for the firm. He handled adoptions, divorces, foreclosures, incorporations, lawsuits of all kinds, leases, Medicare and Social Security cases, mortgages, post-conviction relief, workmen’s compensation and other insurance claims and other legal matters. Two areas of particular interest are his work for the deaf and with the healthcare industry, particularly nursing homes. He represented Nelda K. Barnes, along with the National Center for Law and the Deaf (Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C.), in Barnes v. Converse College. In this 1977 case the Fourth Circuit Court of South Carolina ruled that Converse College was required to provide an interpreter for her continuing education classes according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This was one of the first rulings concerning the responsibility of colleges and universities to make accommodations to deaf students. Dent was also a lobbyist for the South Carolina Association for/of the Deaf and was involved in an attempt to create a separate commission for the deaf similar to the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.

Dent worked with South Carolina Healthcare Association as its counsel. Included among the nursing home cases he undertook is one involving Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter, SC where in 1977 the courts declared the method used to determine Medicare reimbursement of owners and administrators of nursing homes was invalid. He was a director of the Health Investment Group, Inc. which bought out Rickard Nursing Homes in 1977. Rickard owned the Rickard Convalescent Home, the Holsteadt Nursing Home, and the Keisler Nursing Home, all in Lexington, SC. Dent was also a trustee of the corporation’s retirement plan. Records relating to the company include profit sharing plans, financial information, and board minutes, as well as records concerning legal work he did for the firm. One of the other cases Dent worked on was that of Wagdy Kamel Demian, who was an auditor for the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) and later worked for Governors John West (1971-1975) and James B. Edwards (1975-1979), as well as being involved in a Title XX audit for Governor Carroll Campbell (1987-1995). This was a discrimination grievance over a denied promotion that spiraled into dismissal, claims of financial mismanagement on the part of DSS, and allegations that a 1975 automobile accident involving Demian was actually an attack on him. There is much information on DSS, Medicaid payments to nursing homes, and the Title XX audit. Additional items of interest include a mortgage for Republican operative Lee Atwater; legal advice relating to real estate and other businesses for South Carolina Transportation Secretary Harry B. “Buck” Limehouse Jr.; and a collections case for Dr. Allen George Thurmond, brother of U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.

Other correspondents in this collection include South Carolina governor Carroll Campbell; businesswoman Darla Moore; Watergate figure Jeb Magruder; and U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.

See the Photographs Series for photographs removed from this series and the Audio-Visual Series for the audio-visual materials removed from this series.

The material in this series was mainly created by the activities of Laity Alive and Serving, Inc. a lay ministry found by Harry Dent and his wife Betty for “lay people … to help churches motivate and mature” by “speaking, teaching, and writing.” The Dents spoke at church services, Sunday schools, conferences, retreats, jails and homes; conducted religious education classes; conducted missions in the United States and overseas; and wrote teaching texts on the Bible and character education. There is also some material relating to Harry Dent’s religious activities before the creation of Laity Alive; his study of the Bible and on the role of the laity in the church; his activities on behalf of the Southern Baptist Convention, particularly his role as a trustee of the Baptist College at Charleston (later Charleston Southern University) in South Carolina and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and his chairmanship of the 1987 Billy Graham Crusade in Columbia, SC. While there a few items relating to his studies at Columbia Bible College the bulk of the pre-Laity material concerns his service as the first Director of Adult Ministries and Director of the Billy Graham Lay Center in Asheville, NC from 1982-1985. The Center was born out of a fire that destroyed the historic Inn at the Ben Lippen School and Summer Ministries run by the Columbia (SC) Bible College (now Columbia International University) in 1980. The following year the Bill Graham Evangelistic Association gave “The Cove”, which it had purchased in 1972 to the College and in 1982 the Center was established, with the College contracted by the Association to run it. Shortly after Dent left in 1985 the College and the Association mutually decided to cancel the arrangement and in 1987 the Association established the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove. The Center was intended to be a year-round lay training center “to work with pastors and churches in teaching God’s Word in lay witness, discipleship, and evangelism to the world” through conferences, music ministries, seminars, and other educational offerings.

Much of the correspondence concerning the Center consists of invitations; requests for information about the Center, for books and to be put on the Center’s mailing list; and thank you’s for books and for speaking to groups, as well as comments on programs offered by the Center. There is also correspondence with J. Robertson McQuilkin, the President of Columbia Bible College from 1968-1990. The series contains notes for speaking engagements, as well as copies of letters accepting or declining invitations to speak. Some of the earlier history of The Cove (previously known as Porter’s Cove) is given in a July 6, 1982 letter from Lewis H. Miller, Jr. from the National Bible Museum in Gatlinburg, TN. Files relating to Roy King, the Assistant Director of Adult Ministries at the Center include information on programs undertaken and planned, fund-raising, and on meetings with church staff, lay ministers, and others. A good deal of the material in this series concerns Dent’s speaking and teaching and includes invitations, thank you’s, and other correspondence about his speaking engagements; fliers and schedules; his speeches and sermons as well as items gathered and notes taken in his research for those speeches and sermons; and teaching materials such as copies of the overheads he used for his lectures on God and the Bible. There is also material relating to some of his other activities, such as participation in various conferences and meetings such as the 1988 “Religion, Public Values, and Human Responsibilities” Conference held at the University of South Carolina or the International Conference for Itinerant Evangelists held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1986; planning for a proposed video teaching series; and writing religious articles and columns for magazines and newspapers. Finally, there are Dent’s “Books Read” notes that list key points in the books he read and his research on character education and the role of the laity in the church. The Dents conducted a number of overseas missions which are documented in the series: Australia, China, South Korea, the U.S.S.R., and especially Romania centering on the city of Cluj-Napoca. All of the overseas mission material includes correspondence regarding travel arrangements; correspondence with congregants in the country where the mission is being conducted; clippings concerning political and religious conditions in the mission country; tourist information including lists of contacts and itineraries; and reports and speeches made on the mission once the Dents returned to the United States. The Romanian material includes more correspondence with individuals in the host country than the other missions and also includes correspondence concerning the translation of Cover up: the Watergate in all of us into Romanian. There is also information on the University of Cluj-Napoca; the adoption of Romanian children; on political, business and economic conditions in Romania and Cluj-Napoca including business prospectuses and material on the creation of a new constitution; and on missionary work in and relief shipments to the country. There are files relating to efforts by Dent and others to obtain Most Favored Nation trade status for Romania. In addition, there is material relating to establishing a “sister city” relationship between Cluj-Napoca and Columbia, SC and a “sister hospital” relationship between Providence Hospital in Columbia and the Clinic of Cardiology in Cluj-Napoca. A delegation from Romania visited Columbia in 1991 and the arrangements for that visit are well documented; there is also some items relating to the defection of Romanian Senator Vasile Aileni and his family to the United States during the visit. Some of the material in this series is in Romanian; Chinese and Russian are also represented. Dent’s service as a trustee for the Baptist College at Charleston and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary are documented in this series. The material concerning the Baptist College relates mainly to Dent’s service on various committees, fundraising, athletics, and the changing of the College’s name to Charleston Southern University in 1990. That for the Seminary documents the changeover from a moderate to a more conservative board of trustees, questions of academic freedom and diversity among the faculty (i.e., increasing the number of conservative faculty), and controversies concerning the theological stances of President Roy Lee Honeycutt and faculty members E. Glenn Hinson, Molly Marshall-Green, and Paul Simmons. In addition to correspondence with Honeycutt there is correspondence with his successor, Richard Albert Mohler. Also a part of this series is the records of the South Carolina Billy Graham Crusade held in Columbia, South Carolina in April 1987; Harry Dent served as chairman of this organization from 1986-1987. This organization was responsible for planning and carrying out the Crusade but its records are separate from those of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which also has records relating to this Crusade. Most of the material in this series relates to fund-raising and is composed of contributors (potential and actual) lists and form letters. Samples of the form letters were kept, with lists of whom each form letter was sent to. Other material relating to the Crusade includes articles; correspondence; the minutes of the administrative, executive and advisory committees; news releases; a copy of the transcript of an oral history by Dent for the Billy Graham Oral History Program; sample mailings; statistics; and two notebooks of Crusade procedures and publicity material.

Correspondents include Romanian engineers and deacons John Achim and Eugen Stancel and their wives Monica and Vali; evangelists Bill Barton, Leighton Ford, Billy Graham, John Guest, and Josef Tson; Mayor Bob Coble of Columbia, SC; Dent’s wife Betty; Jack Eckerd, founder of Eckerd Drugs; Greg Horton, 1991 President of the South Carolina Baptist Convention; Anthony Miles, a public relations expert in Eastbourne, United Kingdom; artist Liviu Mocan; John Simmons, South Carolina general manager of Southern Bell; Vasile Talos, President of the Evangelical Alliance of Romania; U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond and his wife Nancy; Alastair Walker, formerly pastor of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC; and Dr. Gregore Zanc, professor of philosophy and Prefect of Cluj-Napoca.

Scope and Contents note

The scrapbooks contain, in addition to newspaper clippings, such items as letters, programs, brochures, minutes, agendas, press releases and newsletters. They document the period 1939-1976 and are arranged chronologically.

The bulk of the materials in the first six volumes are from the Yellow Jacket, the St. Mathews High School student newspaper where Dent was associate editor, (1944-1945), editor-in-chief (1946-1947) and sports editor (1947) and from the  Blue Stocking, Presbyterian College's student newspaper where he was sports editor (1947-1948), editor (1948-1949), "office boy" (1949-1950), managing editor (1950-1951) and contributing editor (1951).

The other volumes in this series, while primarily biographical, also include information on state, national and international events of interest to Dent. Subjects include U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, South Carolina elections, U.S. presidential elections (1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976), the South Carolina and national Republican Party, the "southern strategy," school desegregation and civil rights.
