Historical Note

The Appalachian Society of American Foresters was organized as a section of the Society of American Foresters at a meeting in Asheville on October 28, 1921. Several of its founding members were active in the Society of American Foresters which had been founded in 1900. The original area of the Society comprised of the states of Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, north Georgia, and north Alabama. The territory of this section was reduced during the following decades as new sections were formed. The section originally focused on conferences and with papers on technical and scientific aspects of forestry. As the Society grew, committees took specific projects that included forest type classification, education, and various public policy issues.

In 1980, the Society of American Foresters recommended the adoption of a state level organization for its sections which members of the Appalachian section rejected 455-147. The Appalachian Society changed its by-laws to conform with those of the SAF but continued to exist with three state level divisions.

Scope and Contents

The records of the South Carolina Division of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters include by-laws, correspondence, financial records, membership lists, minutes, and registration information documenting the role that this division played in the promotion of forestry and conservation in South Carolina. They document its internal operations and activities, 1956-1997. The bulk of the material dates from 1960-1993.

As one of the three state-level divisions of the Appalachian Society, the South Carolina Division was part of one of the larger societies/sections that comprise the Society of American Foresters. The bulk of the records document the routine operations of the South Carolina section of this professional society as well as its relationship with the Appalachian Society and the national Society of American Foresters. In addition there is occasional reference to conservation issues such as clear cutting of forests although this is largely absent.

Of particular note is the discussion of whether or not the division should remain affiliated with the Appalachian Society or become a stand-alone section of the Society of American Foresters. The Edisto Chapter in the South Carolina has the best documentation of any South Carolina chapter.
