Biographical Note

Dr. Harold Ernest Cheatham had a long career in higher education, with a teaching and research focus on multicultural counseling. He is the author of numerous professional papers and editor or co-editor of several books. He was also a Fulbright Senior Scholar in India (1990-1991). His achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors including recognition as a pioneer in multicultural counseling and development by the American Psychological Association (1997), as a recipient of the Grazella Shepherd Award for Excellence in Education from the Case Western Reserve Alumni Society and Educators Forum (2000) and as a recipient of the Clemson University Board of Trustees Award for Faculty Excellence (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000).

After his retirement from Clemson University in 2001, he continued his commitment to service by joining numerous humanitarian missions to Africa, Vietnam and Haiti.

He was born in Pennsylvania on January 29, 1937. He has a wife, Arlene, and two sons, Mark and Brian.

Scope and Contents

Harold Cheatham's papers span his active career in higher education and public service. They include numerous published writings, some unpublished writings, presentations and speeches, business correspondence, photographs, news clippings and certificates. In addition there are case files and correspondence related to two discrimination suits brought by him in the 1970s.

Processing Information note

Envelopes, the original file folders, duplicates, and routine letters sent to confirm other mailings were discarded. Newspaper clippings were photocopied and originals were discarded. Photographs were inserted in sleeves. All rusting metal staples and fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips or stainless steel staples.

Jen Bingham completed processing of the papers in June 2012.
