Clemson Families,
It is an exciting time of year for our staff in University Housing & Dining. We are in the midst of the October housing signup period for the 2019-2020 academic year. We are pleased to continually offer an array of living options, amenities and staff
support, ensuring your student’s campus experience is nothing short of amazing.
We also want to utilize this space to recognize and offer solutions and resources for resolving any potential roommate conflicts during this time of year. Each year, residents agree on ways to hold each other accountable through the completion of a roommate
agreement. In the event of a conflict or issue, this agreement is reviewed by all parties and their respective resident assistant (RA).
When conflicts arise, the RA will reserve a neutral, private space to host a meeting with all participants. The goal of mediating a conflict or issue between roommates is to share concerns or clarify issues occurring within a particular community. Residents
will confront each other about issues negatively impacting the community, review the roommate agreement and take steps to revise the agreement and determine how to hold each other accountable
to it.
Roommate issues are not uncommon. As is critical whenever any problem arises, the key to a quick and positive resolution is effective communication. The RA will act as a conversation facilitator between all parties, allowing roommates time to share thoughts
without interruption. From there, the parties collectively develop an action plan in response to the presented concerns and issues. Positive and constructive ways to resolve conflict are
brainstormed, and any necessary modifications are made to the roommate agreement. While it may be stressful, please know roommate conflicts are a completely normal part of campus life. Our
staff is well trained to handle these situations and consider this an opportunity to assist your student in developing valuable life skills.
If your student has not yet signed up for 2019-2020 on-campus housing, there is still time! If you are reading this before Oct. 18, you can click
here
to start the process and select your preference. We also will have opportunities to sign up later in the academic year and select from spaces that become available as plans change. We
have a number of great options for upperclassmen, including Calhoun Courts, Douthit Hills, McCabe Hall, Stadium Suites and Thornhill Village.
Sincerely,
|
