Welcome from the Dean of Students
Greetings! I am delighted to both introduce myself to you as the ‘new’ Dean of Students (I rejoined the Clemson Family in November 2013) and excited to welcome you and your student back for another year at Clemson! Whether your student is in their second year or their fifth year with us, please remember that the staff in the Dean of Students Office is here to support your student’s engagement, satisfaction and success and to answer any questions or concerns they (or you) may have throughout their journey. I often describe our office as a hub for campus – a centralized, trusted place for students (and their families) – to come with any question they may have with confidence that we will get them connected to the right campus or community partner to address their concern. Recognizing that the majority of our upper-class students live off-campus, our office had increased our focus on the needs and experiences of our off-campus students this year – please watch for additional information and resources on our website and encourage your student to contact us with questions or concerns they may have related to their off-campus experience as well as to any personal, academic, career or financial concern they may have. I encourage you to learn more about my office at: http://www.clemson.edu/administration/student-affairs/dean. I wish you a joyous and uneventful start to the fall semester and look forward to seeing you at Family Weekend or other events this fall!

Most sincerely yours,
Shannon

Tips to Start the Semester Off Strong
• Reassure your student that although they may know how to do college, it is still important to start strong! You never know, some semesters are more tough than others.
• Encourage your student to start preparing early. Start putting all syllabi into a planner so they will be ahead of the game and confident in their first few weeks of class!
• Talk to your student about the importance of meeting with their professors. Building those relationships early will be a huge advantage throughout the semester!
• Encourage your student to get involved if they haven’t done so already! There are many opportunities at Clemson that will aid your student to feeling at home. A great start to meeting organizations is at Tiger Prowl!
