It's That Time of Year

Dean of Students Shannon M. Finning, Ph.D.FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
Happy New Year! To those of you who are returning members of the Clemson Family, welcome back. To those family members of new Clemson students, welcome to the Clemson Family! We are delighted to have you.

I hope your holidays were joyous and your student returned to or joined us for the spring 2015 semester eager to learn, connect and make Clemson and the world a better place. To support your student's success, please encourage them to engage in healthy sleep, eating and exercise habits and to consider getting a flu shot if they haven't already. The flu vaccine is still available at Redfern Health Center and South Carolina is experiencing a flu surge. We have yet to see the surge at Clemson, but anticipate its arrival, so it’s not too late to get and benefit from the flu vaccine.

In addition to staying healthy, we want to support your student in accomplishing their New Year's resolutions — we hope you do, too. For those students who want to improve their academic record, please encourage them to meet with their advisor and to connect with the Academic Success Center ASAP. For those students considering a change of major and/or career, please encourage them to connect with the Center for Career and Professional Development. For those who want to cultivate new or more meaningful personal relationships and/or to get better connected at Clemson, please refer them to the Dean of Students office. We have some exciting Connect@ (a new program planned for the semester) events that afford students the opportunity to connect with fellow students, staff and opportunities in several different non-intimidating settings. Please contact my office to learn more.

As always, I'm delighted to start the semester with you. If I can be of assistance to you or your student please call my office at 864-656-0935 or email me at finning@clemson.edu. Go Tigers!

Warmest regards,
Shannon

Shannon M. Finning, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Students can reduce stress and fight off the winter blues by engaging in healthy eating, sleeping and exercise habits. With the start of new classes, help your student find the right balance between social activities and academics. Encourage them to use available resources on campus, such as Counseling and Psychological Services or the Academic Success Center. Additional resources can be found on the Healthy Campus website: clemson.edu/healthy-campus.

Encouraging Academic Success

ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER
A campus resource that students are frequently reluctant to access is Student Disability Services. A student who had an IEP or a 504 plan in high school should consider coming to talk about accessing services here. Our processes are different from what is typically encountered in the K-12 world, but we’ll be glad to talk with students and families about how things work in postsecondary education. If students are encountering problems related to a documented disability in classes or other venues on campus (such as housing or mobility) we’ll be glad to help figure out what could help. The Academic Success Center is on the second floor of the Academic Success Building in Suite 239. We look forward to meeting you and your student.
