Promoting Health and Wellness

STAYING HEALTHY DURING A STRESSFUL TIME FOR STUDENTS
The semester is past its halfway mark and we are in the final stretch. As your student begins to prepare for finals, remind your student that they do not have to do it alone; there are many resources available at Clemson University, such as seminars and workshops that deal with overcoming procrastination and mastering finals week. Also, if they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed more than usual, let them know that CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) offers a number of group counseling sessions. If you would like to learn more about Clemson University Healthy Campus and its resources, visit clemson.edu/healthy-campus.

CORENOT MANY WAYS TO KNOCK OUT STRESS LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL OUTDOORS — Outdoor Recreation Opportunities
Clemson University is located just minutes away from renowned mountain biking trails, miles of hiking paths, and multiple lakes, creeks and rivers for recreational use. The benefits of outdoor recreation are vast and easily accessible to students at Clemson University.

Time spent outside has been proven to increase overall wellness. Some of the most unique correlations for college students who choose to engage in outdoor recreation are the intellectual and emotional benefits. Often, people do not associate time spent outside with elevated self-esteem, improved creativity and better concentration in the classroom, but all of these outcomes can be linked to simply having fun and enjoying what is at the fingertips of Clemson students.

6 ways to get involved with Outdoor Recreation at Clemson:
  1. Sign up for a trip — Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education, a division under Student Affairs, offers over 40 trips a year. A variety of trips, including skiing, rafting, backpacking and paddle boarding are available at reduced costs for students. These trips are especially unique because they include transportation, guide fees, all necessary gear and permits. For more information, please visit clemson.edu/campus-life/campus-recreation/outdoorrec/index-cat.html.
  2. Rent equipment — Have existing outdoor knowledge? Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) rents everything from sleeping bags and tents, to boats and stoves for students’ use.
  3. Plan a custom trip with friends or co-workers — University organizations often take advantage of CORE’s custom trip option by working with CORE to plan a trip specific to the wants and needs of their group. Custom trips are a great way to inspire teamwork and get to know friends/co-workers on a new level. University Housing alone offers over 30 completely FREE trips annually for on-campus residents.
  4. Take a class — Clemson University offers around 40 (varying by semester) outdoor related leisure skills courses available to students for class credit. Classes include: Wilderness First Aid, Fly Fishing, Women’s Hunting Traditions and Island Kayaking. To learn more, visit clemson.edu/hehd/departments/prtm/leisureskills.
  5. Take advantage of multiple resources — The CORE office, located at Campus Beach off of Highway 93, has a variety of outdoor resources available for students. Adventure seekers can come by and make copies of local maps, talk to knowledgeable staff and ask questions related to gear and trip planning. Free boat rentals are available during the week for students as well, allowing them to make the most of beautiful Lake Hartwell. Seeing Death Valley from the water is a pretty cool experience too!
  6. Join a club — Looking for a competitive way to enjoy the great outdoors? There are 15 outdoor club sports available for students to join. More information can be found at clemson.edu/campus-life/campus-recreation/club-sports.

Clemson Home Corner

Faculty in ResidenceCLEMSON HOME CORNER
Did you know that our new Faculty-Student Dining Initiative fosters connections by encouraging relationship building with students outside of the classroom in our dining halls? Hear what one of our faculty members has to say about the experience:
"It’s been very meaningful to get to help my current students, meet students I would not have otherwise, show all of them that faculty and staff do care about them and also in helping me grow. I get to help them for class but I also get to connect with them on a more personal level and reinforce that I am here for them and that I am supportive of not only their work and their extra-curricular activities, but also that I care about their being. I find that many of them just want to know we care about them."

Encouraging Academic Success

MidtermMIDTERM GRADES POSTED
Midterm grades have just been posted! This is a great time to check in with your student and honestly evaluate their academic performance. It is important to remember that if your student isn’t doing well, they may be worried to talk to you about this. Be sure to have goals for your student, while also encouraging your student when they may not be meeting them. Encourage your student to schedule an appointment with an academic coach to look at their midterm grades and make decisions about how to proceed to achieve the academic success they want this semester. Check out our opportunities here: clemson.edu/asc/acc/coaching.html.
