New Semester — Fresh Start!
Spring 2016 Study Abroad Fair

Happy New Year,

To those returning from the fall, welcome back for a great semester. To those starting at Clemson for the first time, I would like to wish you a warm welcome to the Clemson Family! What an exciting start we have had between sending our football team to the National Championship, the 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, the Spring Career Fair and having the first snowfall of 2016!

As we enter the spring 2016 semester, there are several time-sensitive topics to discuss with your student to support a successful transition back. Some of the most common matters to consider during January and February relate to some of the topics listed below. Underneath each topic, we have placed the Clemson resource you can talk specifically to, to get the information you need to support your student!

Finances — Payments are due, FAFSAs are available to be completed and tax season is about to begin.
Housing — Pick out housing for the 2016–2017 academic year. Academics — Create an academic plan to have a successful semester. We hope these resources can help you support your student in making a strong academic plan and in helping them prioritize goals for the spring semester. Please know there are also other resources we have put together to help you along the way. Be sure to visit our Dean of Students' Office Blog and our Family Website for more helpful tools! Lastly, if you are missing your students already, a great time to come to campus and visit them is at the Spring Family Reunion!

Wishing you the best for the 2016 year!

Sincerely,

Paige Kegley
Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs

New Parent and Family Website is LIVE
The Office of New Student and Family Programs has completed a website just for our parents/families of students. This site has multiple tools to help parents and families stay informed throughout the year and have easy access to some of the most common Clemson resources we get questions about, as well as tools on how to support your student throughout college. Check it out today!

Students Graduating in the Spring
The light is officially at the end of the tunnel — but your student must apply for commencement in time. If you have a student graduating in the spring, remind them to follow this link on IROAR to apply at Enrolled Student Services electronically. The last day to apply for May commencement is January 27.

Help your Student Avoid the “Winter Blues”
Be alert to emotional changes in your student that may reflect signs of depression or anxiety. The winter months and start of a new semester could cause these changes as students adjust to a new schedule and colder weather. Encourage your student to keep active, eat healthy, stay positive, build social connections and get involved with a new organization, club, sport, etc., so they can avoid the “winter blues.” Visit Healthy Campus' website to learn more.

Spring Family Reunion Registration is Open

Register for Spring Intramurals
It’s that time again! Spring Intramurals will start before we know it. Encourage your student to check out the schedule and try something new.

MLK Day of Service
On Jan. 18, 2016, many students, faculty and staff from Clemson University proudly served the local Clemson community for the MLK Day of Service. They visited 11 sites across the region to address social needs including, homelessness and hunger, environmental sustainability, youth and geriatric advocacy, and community enrichment. Together, the Clemson family can make a difference. Their impact on the community was substantial and sustainable. Way to go, Tigers!

Tigers Together to Stop Suicide
Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life. Most times, students find healthy ways to manage stress. However, there may be times when your student needs help coping. Learn about warning signs for suicidality and Clemson University resources to promote emotional well-being: Tigers Together to Stop Suicide.

Clemson Writing Center
Is your student great at coming up with ideas, but not necessarily getting them onto paper? Do they like a second set of eyes on their final lab report or need someone to assist with citing properly? The Writing Center is a great spot for students in any major to utilize for exploring ideas, creating structure/formatting for a paper, appropriately citing sources or thinking through stylistic choices.

Spring Break — Start Planning Now
Is your student planning to go away for Spring Break? If you haven’t already, this would be a good time to start having conversations about it. Begin talking about where and when they will go as well as thinking through a financial plan to fund it.

Staying Well through the Winter
Cold and flu season is upon us. If your student gets sick, encourage them to stay home, get lots of rest, stay hydrated and wash their hands often. Many over-the-counter medications are available at reduced cost in Redfern Health Center’s pharmacy. If your student believes they may have the flu, encourage them to call for an appointment at Redfern.
