Clemson Family,
The chill is in the air, and the students are getting anxious waiting for their break in a few short weeks. The mid-February to March and October to November timeframe always seem to be a challenge for students. This is when they have mid-terms in classes, multiple class projects due, club/organization commitments and there never seem to be enough hours in the day!
One of the things that may not be on your student’s mind quite as much as it is probably on yours is safety during spring break. We have compiled a short list of conversations that may be worth discussing with your student as the break approaches.
- Alcohol and other Drugs Use — If your student chooses to drink, talk to them about the importance of alternating water, pacing drinks to one an hour, choosing a designated driver and watching their drink at all times. Please encourage them to obey the laws regarding drug use.
- Making Responsible Sexual Decisions — If they choose to be intimate, discuss the importance of using protection and getting a clear and sober yes from their partner.
- Bystander Intervention — Encourage your student to protect their friends from being a victim or perpetrator of assault by intervening.
- Community Decisions — Your student should never stray from the community of friends they are with, so talk to them about sticking together.
- Be Aware of Emergency Contacts — In case of an emergency, remind your student to know the emergency contacts in the area: hospitals, police, family members, hotels, etc. — especially if they are traveling or in an unfamiliar area.
Spring Break is a very exciting time for students and we want it to be relaxing, fun and as stress free as possible. Having these short conversations will hopefully help them to prepare, in a smart way, for a great week! For more resources about these topics, please visit our Healthy Campus webpage and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest!
Sincerely,
Office of Healthy Campus

Guiding Your Student through Body Image |
As a parent, it’s important to talk with your student about body image and eating disorders. College can be an extraordinarily difficult time with comparing oneself to others and with many eating habits changing. This is exceptionally common as Spring Break, summer and swimsuit season approach. Research has shown that young girls’ body image is most influenced by their mothers’ attitude. Please check out a great article written by University Parent on "How can I talk to my student about eating disorders?" to provide some quick tips in having these sensitive conversations. |
