The Scholar's Field Guide to Clemson University

Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) Located in North Charleston, SC, the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) drives economic growth, innovation and workforce development in the state’s Lowcountry. CURI facilities provide faculty, researchers, scientists and students with ample opportunity to impact the growing tech economy while also appreciating the rich historical heritage in the surrounding area. At any given time on the CURI campus, teams are working on a diverse range of projects including: historic preservation, restoration ecology, advanced materials research, digital production arts and filmmaking, marine conservation and electric grid testing -- to name just a few. Warren Lasch Conservation Center (WLCC) The Warren Lasch Conservation Center (WLCC) , housed on the CURI campus, is a 45,917-square-foot materi- als analysis and characterization facility stocked with cutting edge equipment. The WLCC’s tank room holds a 90,000-gallon tank with two 20-ton cranes on rails where research and conservation is conducted on the 1860s submarine H.L. Hunley. The results of the dedi- cated analysis, preservation and stabilization of the H.L. Hunley and its collection of artifacts are being shared with the global scientific community and applied to other conservation projects around the world. WLCC is equipped with: • AICON MoveInspect DPA coordinate measuring system • Breuckmann OptoTOP-HE 3D scanner • Bruker HYPERION FT-IR microscope • Bruker SENTERRA dispersive Raman microscope • Bruker Tracer III-SD handheld XRF analyzer • Dionex ICS-90 chromatography system • FujiFilm Dynamix HR2 computed radiography system • Golden Engineering XRS-2 pulsed x-ray • Hitachi S-3700N scanning electron micro- scope with Oxford INCAx-act EDS and INCA- Wave 500i WDS • Novel compressed fluids technolog systems • Seifert-Eresco MF1 industrial x-ray – 22 –
