Description of  U.S. Congressional District 3

  


District 3 covers 5,386 square miles, encompassing the following counties:
 

Abbeville Aiken
Anderson Edgefield
Greenwood Laurens
McCormick Oconee
Pickens Saluda

The population of District 3 is 581,104, centered in the following cities and towns with populations over 10,000:

Anderson 26,184
Clemson 11,096
Easley 15,595
Greenwood 20,807
North Augusta 15,351

In addition to the above cities, there are numerous small towns in the area.  42% of the population live in Urban areas, and 58% live in Rural areas (including .15% who live on farms).

The racial composition of the area is 78% white, 21% black, and 1% other races.

52% of the population is female, with a median age of 33.5; 48% of the population is male, with a median age of 32.1.  75% of the people are voting-age.

62% of the males over age 15 are married, 27% have never been married, 2% are separated, 2.5% are widowed, and 6.3% are divorced.

55% of the females over age 15 are married, 21% have never been married, 3% are separated, 13.5% are widowed, and 7.2% are divorced.

Of the 368,361 people who are over age 25, 64.3% have attained a high school degree or higher, and 14.4% have attained a bachelor's degree or higher.

94% of District 3 residents 16 years old or older are employed.

20% of workers are employed in management or professional positions; 25% in technical, sales, or support positions; 11% in service occupations; 9% in farming, fishing, or forestry; 16% in skilled labor; and 26% in unskilled labor.
 
 

The following industries employ the most individuals:

    Professional and Related Services 19.3%
        (including  Educational Services  8.7% and Health Services   6.5%)
    Retail Trade                    15%
    Construction                    7.8%
    Communication and other Utility    3.6%
    Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate 3.6%

15% of the work force is employed by state, local, or federal government.  Major employers in Anderson County, Oconee County, and Pickens County are listed here.

Income in 1989 averaged $36,221 for households in District 3, vs. $36,562. for the state.  9.7% of District families were below the poverty level, compared to 11.7% for the state.

There are 238,760 housing units in the District, with 90% occupied by the owner.  The median value for owner-occupied units is $54,400. (The state median value is $61,100.)
