A NOTE FROM THE VP Follow Me On Twitter
August 28, 2018

Greetings from the Vice President’s office!

Summer has come and gone and a new academic year is underway. Each fall semester brings new faces to Student Affairs, and I want to personally extend a warm welcome and thank you for joining our division and impacting the lives of Clemson students. The beginning of a new year is a busy time, and a number of programs and events have already been held during the first few weeks. I am grateful for the commitment each of you has shown, and I look forward to a great year together.

Douthit Hills has opened with more than 1,600 beds for continuing students and freshmen. The centerpiece of this outstanding addition to campus is the Hub, a three-story venue featuring the new Barnes and Noble® bookstore, various dining options and nearly 30,000 square feet of exercise and fitness space. The bookstore and food outlets have opened with positive reviews and the recreation space is scheduled to be completed soon.

We are excited to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Sept. 14 to officially welcome our newest residential community. This ceremony gives us a chance to thank all of the construction crews and staff who have worked so hard to make this project a reality.

Because of this new community and the ongoing construction of the College of Business, important changes are noted below to several intersections on Walter T. Cox Boulevard — also known as Highway 93 — to create a pedestrian-friendly environment for students, faculty, staff and guests.
  • An intersection and traffic lights were added at Newman Road. It was realigned to create safer traffic patterns and alleviate congestion. Over the summer, Newman Rd. was extended and now connects to Perimeter Road. The new intersection at Highway 93 and Newman Rd. will improve traffic access to Perimeter Rd. without using Highway 76. In addition, temporary speed tables were placed at the intersection of Highway 93 and College Avenue, Sherman and Cherry roads, and Calhoun Drive, which features a safer T-shaped intersection.
It is a special time in Clemson. Last week, we welcomed more than 5,000 first-year and transfer students and more than 1,800 graduate students at University Convocation. Available data shows a 10 percent increase in undergraduate applications, a trend the university has seen consistently over the past five years. These numbers are a credit to not only the quality of learning opportunities inside the classroom, but also the unique experiences offered as a result of the great work done throughout our division. On behalf of our entire team, thank you and go Tigers!
