A NOTE FROM THE VP Follow Me On Twitter
October 15, 2018
Greetings from the Vice President’s office!
The fall semester is moving very quickly, and we have a lot to celebrate within the Division of Student Affairs. I wanted to share a few of these items with you:
  • As we continue with the implementation of our strategic plan, the division continues to realign financial and human resources to be consistent with ClemsonForward and the university’s goal of being recognized as a top-20 public university. Processes are underway to eliminate unnecessary redundancies, enhance efficiency and improve quality in all programmatic and operational areas.
  • One way we have enhanced the quality of services we offer in Student Affairs is through our newest residential community, Douthit Hills. We look forward to hosting students, faculty, staff and visitors in an open house from 1:30-3:30 p.m. throughout the Hub on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Hub will soon be completed with the addition of nearly 30,000 square feet of Campus Recreation space on the second floor, which offers students a great range of fitness and cardio options on the east side of campus. The open house will feature giveaways, raffles, food and beverage samples, tours of the new spaces, lawn games and a DJ.
  • We will be seeking approval for Phase II of the Samuel J. Cadden Chapel project at the upcoming board of trustees meeting. The Boudreaux Group was chosen as the architectural firm for the project, and we are in the process of evaluating contractors who will build this incredibly important addition to our campus.
  • I want to personally extend a big thanks from Student Affairs to Jeff Brown, who will soon be the Dean of Students at American University. Jeff has performed great work throughout our division for nearly 20 years, first in University Housing and then in his current role leading Student Transitions and Family Programs. Interviews took place recently for our new director of Orientation Programs, so we look forward to filling these two important positions with quality replacements very soon.
In closing, we would like to offer our continued thoughts and prayers to everyone on staff who may have family and friends in the Southeast impacted by the devastation from Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Kathy Hensen
Kathy Hensen was honored as the “Staff Member of the Game” during Clemson’s football game against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Sept. 15. She and her husband, Jack (pictured), were introduced following the first quarter of the game before a crowd of nearly 80,000 people in Memorial Stadium. Kathy is the administrative coordinator for Almeda Jacks and George Smith, the vice president and chief of staff for Student Affairs. She will be retiring from her position effective Nov. 1 after 18 years of service to the university.

Tom Reed Family
Tom and Kathy Reed were the recipients of the “Herb Coughlan Memorial Family of the Year.” Tom and Kathy are members of the Vice President’s Executive Council, and Tom is a member of the President’s Advisory Board as well. They recently made a significant financial pledge in order to name a future softball field at the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Center. Their son, Matt, a senior at Clemson, was on the field along with the vice president for Student Affairs, Almeda Jacks, for the presentation of the award during Clemson’s football game against Syracuse on Sept. 29.
