Personal Safety and Theft Prevention Tips
Practicing good personal safety habits is the best way to protect yourself in any environment. These tips are designed to help you build these skills to stay safe on and off campus.
Remember, always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Please report crimes and suspicious activity immediately to the Clemson University Police Department (911 or 864-656-2222).
Theft Prevention
  • Keep valuables out of sight, including purses and wallets, cellphones, electronics and jewelry, and never leave your valuables unattended.
  • Do not carry more than you need. Leave unnecessary valuable items securely in your residence.
  • Safeguard your wallet, checkbook and credit cards, especially while exercising or socializing in local restaurants and bars.
  • Always lock your car doors. Do not your leave keys in the car.
Mopeds and Bicycles
  • Lock your ignition and remove the key.
  • Look for spots to park your moped that are visible.
  • Use locks to secure your moped. Locks take time to remove, which may deter thieves.
  • Attach and lock your moped to a stationary object if possible.
  • The lock should be attached through the frame of your moped or, less desirably, through the forks or wheel.
  • Attach your lock up and away from the ground. This prevents thieves from getting extra leverage to pry the lock.
  • Remember to remove your lock and/or cable before riding away.
  • Do not leave your moped running.
  • Keep all of your papers (registration) on you, rather than with the moped.
Driver Safety
  • Wait until you arrive at your location to make cellphone calls. However, if you must talk on your cellphone while traveling, use headphones or a hands-free device to keep your phone secure and out of sight.
Personal Safety
  • Register for the Rave Guardian free mobile safety app found at clemson.edu/cusafety/cupd/raveguardian/.
  • Avoid isolated areas, such as underground garages, alleys, parking lots and offices after business hours.
  • Walk with a group, especially at night. From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, use Tiger Transit 864-656-3333.
  • Be familiar with the locations of the Blue Light Emergency Phones on campus.
  • If you feel like you are being followed, move as fast as possible toward the nearest lit and populated building. You can also cross the street in the middle of the road or flag down a passing car for assistance. If on campus, activate a Blue Light Emergency Phone or call CUPD at 911 or 864-656-2222.
  • Carry your wallet inside your coat or in your front pants pocket.
  • Maintain a safe distance from strangers, even if they just ask for directions.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when using ATMs. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction. If you must use an ATM after hours, use one in a well-lit area where you feel safe.
