Greetings from the Vice President’s office!
It has been a wonderful year in the Division of Student Affairs. As we head into the holiday season and prepare to turn the calendar to a new year, we thought it would be an excellent time to reflect on some highlights from 2017 in three important areas — student engagement, campus safety and fundraising.
Student engagement remains a cornerstone of our efforts. We continue to be amazed at the great philanthropic work done by our fraternities and sororities. Among them, Zeta Tau Alpha raised a record $75,000 toward breast cancer education and awareness.
Clemson was rated No. 1 nationally in career services by The Princeton Review. Recent survey data collected by the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) shows that less than four percent of 2016–17 Clemson graduates sought employment six months after graduation. Much of the credit for such an outstanding figure goes to our CCPD staff.
Clemson was named the nation’s safest college campus in August. We continue to make strong investments in equipment, training and personnel to enhance the safety of our students. For example, we added a new fire truck with a 100-foot ladder to our fleet and opened a new substation on Issaqueena Trail to serve the broader Clemson community. We are planning to add a new ambulance to our emergency medical services unit as Douthit Hills opens in the fall of 2018. Because of this addition, we will see an increase of nearly 1,600 students on campus next fall, making safety even more critical. Emergency preparedness is at an all-time high, and the refinement of business continuity operation plans and installation of trauma kits throughout campus have been two important steps taken in 2017.
Last week we received final approval for the second phase of the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Center. We expect to break ground soon on a new synthetic turf field as well as a new multi-purpose facility for our CORE (Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education) program, providing new and exciting enhancements to the Clemson Experience.
Fundraising for the Snow Center and other capital projects is at a record pace. To this point in the fiscal year, we are nearly $900,000 ahead in private giving from where we were at the same time last year. Over $4 million has been raised for the Samuel J. Cadden Chapel, including two pillar donor commitments this year alone. These pledges have provided great momentum for a pivotal addition to our campus.
We also welcomed the addition of the Barnes Center in the spring, and it has given our student programming a significant boost. On top of that, several of our areas will benefit from the recent partnership with JMI Sports and its campus marketing team. Their support will allow us to expand wonderful opportunities to positively enhance the programs and services we offer our students.
I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season! Each of you has played a tremendous role in our success, and I can’t wait for 2018 to continue working together on the many great things ahead for Clemson University and Student Affairs.
Safe travels to those of you heading to New Orleans to cheer on our team as we face Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Go Tigers!
Sincerely,
|
