BRIDGE CLASSROOM APPLICATIONS TO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD
WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP
An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates classroom knowledge with career-related work experience.
This can be a vital link between college majors and the exploration of professional opportunities.
INTERNSHIP CHARACTERISTICS
• Pay - Internships can be paid or unpaid.
• Duration - Internships typically last 14-16 weeks in the fall or spring and 10-14 weeks in the summer.
• Location - Anywhere in the world! The University Professional Internship and Co-op Program (UPIC) offers
on-campus internships and the Michelin Career Center offers off-campus and international internships.
• Eligibility - Any class level or major can intern. Employers may prefer juniors, seniors or graduate students due to
those students having more advanced discipline knowledge. For the UPIC Program, students can intern after their
first semester at Clemson University.
• Coursework - Depending on your major and when you intern, you may be required to enroll in an internship
course. Otherwise, internship coursework is optional. Credit-bearing internship courses are available in many majors.
Speak with your academic advisor for more information. The Center offers noncredit-bearing internships.
