Do those statistics worry you? Don’t let them. The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) is here to

help prepare you for this new world of work. How? We created the core competencies based on research and feedback

from employers and graduate and professional schools. To increase your chances of employement cross any discipline

moving into the gig economy, students should develop and learn to articulate their development in the core competencies

listed on the next page.

SO WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?

MINDSET

- Whether your plans call for entering the work force immediately after graduation or continuing your

education in graduate or professional school, you will need to polish skills you already have, develop skills you don’t have

and apply them in a variety of settings.

WHY

- Employers and graduate and professional schools want you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitude

(aka competency) necessary for success in their respective environments. In the Center, we are busy collecting data from

employers to help you understand what competencies and proficiency levels of those competencies are most important

for each discipline.

WHO

- You play the pivotal role, but Clemson will provide opportunities to develop skills essential to your success.

WHAT

- Clemson has defined five proficiency levels: awareness, basic, intermediate, advanced and expert. You should

not expect to be an expert in all competencies by graduation. Lifelong improvement and growth is desirable and

expected.

WHERE

- You will have opportunities to develop these competencies through classes, organizations, work experiences

(internships, co

-

ops, part

-

time jobs), research, study abroad, volunteering and more.

WHEN

- Take steps throughout your years at Clemson to increase your proficiency in multiple competencies. Use

this career guide as a handy tool for learning how to develop these competencies and learn how to articulate them in

employment or graduate or professional school settings. Throughout the guide, learn when you have the potential to

develop or articulate a competency.

HOW

- You can go through the - Learn, Act, Flex, Succeed - cycle to gain proficiency in these or any other competencies.
