"I need to pay close attention to the courses I take, as I am a double major who wants to graduate on time."

About Jenny

Jenny is finishing up her last semester at Clemson, and she is taking eighteen credit hours. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and she takes rock climbing at Fike once a week. She also attends FCA on a weekly basis. When she isn't in class at one or at one of her club meetings, she can be found in the library because taking eighteen hours is a handful.

Key Attributes

  • Jenny enjoys learning about Japanese language and culture

  • She studied abroad in Japan for one year

  • Her concentration is in Writing and Publication Studies

  • She wants to go to graduate school after she graduates in May 2011, but she is not sure what she wants to study yet

  • She is a very diligent student

  • She is very helpful to her friends because she often devotes time to editing their papers

Tasks

College Page

Jenny does not visit the college page very often, but when she does, she is usually looking for information about a department other than English within CAAH. For instance, she visits the College's home page to find out the latest news, and she occasionally visits the CAAH page as a portal to the Brooks Center page to look up the schedule of events. She also uses the site as a portal to the English and History web sites when she does not use the A-Z index.

To get to the CAAH home page, she enters www.clemson.edu/CAAH in her search bar.She initially looks for "News & Announcements" in the left navigation, and she looks for the Brooks Center button in the right navigation on the CAAH homepage. She would like to see some sort of listing of events for the whole college because she does not like to refer to Clemson's master calendar (she is not interested in sifting through a lot of information that does not pertain to CAAH).

Jenny stays on the College page for a few seconds when she uses it as a portal. When she is interested in reading about the latest news, she scans the page for less than five minutes. From the CAAH home page, she goes to the English and History department pages.

Department Page

Jenny recalls going to the English department page several times. When she changed her major to English, she went to find out the class requirements, and she has gone back at least once a semester to print off the "English Major Worksheet." Jenny also visited the history page when she was thinking about double majoring in this department. She wanted to learn about the different teachers and decide which ones to take for this semester.

To find the English Major Worksheet, she uses the A-Z index at the top of the Clemson home page and finds English. Occasionally she goes to the CAAH home and clicks Departments. Jenny likes how the history site has descriptions of each teacher and the works that they have accomplished. She would like for the language department to have pictures of the Japanese professors just like the faculty page in the history department.

Jenny looks for The English Major Worksheet, which details all of the classes to take in order to graduate. She has to make sure to pay close attention to the worksheet so that she graduates on time. When she visits that History page, she researches the number of credits she needs to take to fulfill her major requirements.

Jenny wishes that the English department would post the list of classes and times for the upcoming semester during advising. Also, she thinks it would be interesting to have a list of websites that could be helpful for rising seniors in the English major to look for job. For the History web site, she would like to see a link to a History Major Worksheet so that she can keep better track of her progress.

She stays on the site for under a minute when she is just looking for the worksheet. When she is searching both the History and English sites for information on faculty, she spends about three to four minutes per department site. From the English department page, she visits the History web site. After scanning the history site for information, she leaves Clemson's web site.

Program Page

After Jenny declared her English major, she went to the "undergraduate areas of study page" within the English Department to decide on her concentration. She used the A-Z index to search for this specific information. She looked for information about Literature and WPS when she declared her English major during the first semester of her sophomore year. She knew that she was not interested in the English Education concentration.

She would like to see specific course topics from the past under each concentration in the English department to get a better feel for each program. Jenny stays on the page for less than four minutes; from here, Jenny leaves the Clemson web site.
